Deacon Nick Fargo

Monday, November 4, the OLM Parish Family gathered to celebrate the Funeral Mass for Deacon Nick Fargo, a long-time member of the parish who died at the age of 98. He was ordained a deacon in 1974 and was a member of the first group of men to be ordained as permanent deacons for the Archdiocese of Newark. During his career, Nick Fargo served in the US Air Force during World War II. He was a member of the Jersey City Fire Department, reaching the rank of Deputy Chief. He also served Jersey City as its Director of Fire & Emergency Services and as Director of Public Safety.

In addition to serving our parish as a deacon, he also worked with Sister Alice McCoy of Our Lady of Sorrows Parish in establishing Hudson Hospice Volunteers. Deacon Nick, who retired from active ministry in 2011, was a faithful servant of the Lord, a true Catholic gentleman, and a proud member of Our Lady of Mercy. As Father Jack Cryan put it during his homily, “Deacon Nick was a man who wonderfully embodied the way of life proclaimed in the Beatitudes.” He will be missed.
