Stroke Victims benefit from Aphasia Center
The distress and trauma of stroke to survivors and their families can be enormous. Fully 40 percent of all stroke survivors and victims of other brain traumas suffer from aphasia, a language disorder that impairs expression and understanding of spoken language, reading, and writing. Fortunately, help for patients and their families is available here in New Jersey. The Adler Aphasia Center in Maywood provides community-based, long-term therapeutic care for people with aphasia. With the guidance of a top-tier scientific advisory board of leading speech-language pathologists and health care leaders, the Center’s unique program places priority on the life concerns of those affected by aphasia and assists them in their efforts to return to active life. The programs and activities offered at the Adler Aphasia Center all share the important goals of enhancing the communication skills, providing opportunities for social and peer support, and building self-esteem and self-confidence to help lead productive lives. The Center serves patients from across the socio-economic spectrum. The programs and services provided at the Adler Aphasia Center are not reimbursed through traditional medical insurance. Almost all patients are at a financial disadvantage, either due to losing their jobs and careers as a result of their disability or as older adults living on fixed incomes and struggling to pay for healthcare supports and therapies. For more information about the Adler Aphasia Center and its programs, call 201-368-8585 or visit the Center’s website at www.adleraphasiacenter.org
